Mono Lake is very unusual. It is a large, shallow saline soda lake in Mono County. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. As such, it has an unusually productive ecosystem based on brine shrimp that thrive in its waters, and provides critical nesting habitat for two million annual migratory birds that feed on the shrimp.

Lee Vining is also the east end of Tioga Pass into Yosemite National Park. Fantastic park! We have driven and hiked from this east side. When there in 2014 (these images) we had sun, fog, mist, rain, sleet and snow all in one day!
